Abstract

Introduction: Laparoscopic surgery in pediatrics has increased adoption due to its benefits, such as less surgical trauma and faster recovery, but it also presents unique challenges, including the specific anatomy of pediatric patients and the need for training of the surgical team. This study aimed to develop a practical guide to standardize procedures in the initial phase of laparoscopic interventions in pediatric patients, thus improving patient safety and the efficiency of the surgical team. Methods: A prospective, multicenter, qualitative study was conducted, based on surveys of pediatric surgeons with experience in laparoscopy. A checklist was created, which was validated by a panel of experts. Results: There was unanimous consensus among experts on the importance of reviewing the medical history and performing detailed preoperative evaluations. Items were identified for a checklist that included: patient identity, preparation of the surgical environment, and verification of equipment and materials. The final guideline was developed based on feedback received and was designed to be easily applicable in both elective and emergency operating room settings. Conclusions: The implementation of a practical guide and a checklist for the initial phase of laparoscopic surgery in pediatrics can reduce adverse events, optimizing surgical time, communication and teamwork in the operating room.
