Abstract

Introduction: sleep is a vital activity for living beings, sleep deprivation is associated with poor prognosis in general in any disease, preventing the prompt improvement of patients. Being hospitalized causes patients to be exposed to various factors that interrupt their sleep and prevent adequate rest. Objective: to determine the quality of sleep and the factors that affect it in patients hospitalized at the La Trinidad Teaching Medical Center. Materials and methods: epidemiological study, clinical descriptive, longitudinal and prospective. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was applied on the first and second day of hospitalization. Result: It is observed that the average score of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index on the first day of hospitalization was 5.86, and on the second day it was 7.39 with a p value of (0.02). Each component of the sleep quality questionnaire was compared and the sleep duration component was the only one with a significant decrease, with its p value (0.001) close to the value of statistical significance. The main cause of difficulty in falling asleep is the discomfort of the bed (26%). Health personnel are the greatest sleep disruptors, both at night (46%) and in the morning (67%). Conclusions: it is evident that comparing the mean score of the patients on the first day and on the second day there was an increase in the score which means that there was a decrease in the quality of sleep of hospitalized patients though does not represent any statistical significance.
