Abstract

The prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has increased in recent years, increasing also the need for early diagnosis and early approach. The interest in early identification lies in the evidence that specific early intervention for the child and family leads to improved prognosis. Few tools have been prospectively tested with children older than 6 months, although several warning signs may be present at early stages. We considered it important to adapt a scale to our culture, which is simple and effective, selecting the Communication and Symbolic Behavior Developmental Profile Scale (CSBS-DP). The objective is to establish the content and face validity of the adaptation of the CSBS-DP scale, as a screening for warning signs of ASD in pediatric population from 6 months to 24 months. This is a feasible project. 100% of the items belonged to the domains measured by the modified CSBS-DP questionnaire. Eighty percent of the items could be identified as early warning signs for ASD. 100% of the items have an appropriate vocabulary for our culture. Improvements in item wording were considered, where 20% had suggestions for adaptation. It is feasible, necessary according to the parents' opinion, the application of simple and reliable instruments for the early identification of warning signs for ASD, however, more studies with statistically viable samples are needed to submit the proposed model to criterial validity and predictive validity.
