Abstract

Introduction: ovarian cancer is the second most common type of female reproductive cancer, and one of the most lethal. Despite its low positive predictive value, transvaginal ultrasound is the first-line diagnostic imaging method for the evaluation of adnexal pathology. In expert hands, it has excellent performance in distinguishing between benign and malignant ovarian tumors. Objectives: to evaluate the level of concordance between the pre-surgical clinical and ultrasound diagnosis and post-surgical diagnosis by histopathology of ovarian tumors of patients who attended the gynecology service from 2014 to 2021. Methodology: observational, descriptive, retrospective, correlational study. The population the population corresponded to all the patients who attended the gynecology service of the La Trinidad Teaching Medical Center between 2014 and 2021, taking as a sample all the patients diagnosed with ovarian tumors who underwent surgery for this reason, in the same period. Results: 100 patients with ultrasound diagnosis of ovarian tumor were included, who underwent surgery. Of these 100 patients, 18 were excluded. There was agreement in 72% when it came to endometrioma, 66.7% serous cystadenoma, and 64.3% teratoma. There was 98.1% agreement when it came to benignity and 66.7% agreement when it came to malignancy. Conclusion: The pre-surgical diagnosis is correct, in relation to the histological types, when it comes to detecting endometrioma, serous cystadenoma and teratoma and it is correct when it comes to differentiating benign from malignant tumors, presenting greater specificity than sensitivity.
